Kirehe: Ruhanga residents tipped on crime prevention

Léonard Bihoyiki, the executive secretary of Kigina sector in Kirehe district urged residents of Ruhanga cell to stand up jointly against illegal and criminal acts in the area.

He made the call on September 29 in a meeting with residents of Ruhanga. This was during a community gathering to discuss on community development issues and security in particular.

“We need to move ahead; police and the government in general has laid a firm foundation for us as responsible Rwandans to carry on…to fight and prevent crimes and be active in community development activities, and that should be everyone’s main focus,”  Bihoyiki said.

He noted that there are some people in the sector involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking and use, and making of illicit brew, known by members of the community.

"It is no longer an entirely police role to ensure security; it has come down to you to fight for what is good for you and that starts with fighting drug dealers, thieves, domestic and gender violence and child abuse,” he noted.

Assistant Inspector of Police Gahigi Harelimana, Kirehe District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), said illicit gins, brew and soothing substances like cannabis pose great danger to community development and fuel family conflicts, theft and school drop outs.

He lauded their input in ensuring security, but urged them to double their efforts.
