Kirehe residents urged to promote Community Policing

Residents of Kirehe District have been called upon to be active and promote adopt the idea of community policing, an effective tool that will anable them fight crimes in partnership with Police and other institutions.

In a workshop held on April 6, in Kigarama Sector, RNP officers discussed with over 300 residents in the district on initiatives to enforce peace and security, especially against crimes like drug abuse, drug trafficking and gender-based violence. 

"Residents of Kirehe have indicated a strong willingness to work with Police in turning back crime. This effort is appreciated and it should be sustained in order to efficiently protect the area against crimes that may undermine achievements in peace and security," IP Gahigi Harerimana, the District Community Liaison Officer, said.

"Wrongdoers want to use porous borders in Kirehe to traffic drugs and illicit brew into the country. Through community policing, you should always alert Police whenever you suspect anyone or a group of people of conducting such crimes," he added.

He reminded the residents that it is their role to protect the youth in the area against being exposed to the dangerous effects of drug abuse and drugs trafficking - and asked them to carry out continuous sensitization campaigns against the scourge.

The Executive Secretary of Kigarama Sector, Theoneste Nizeyimana, commended Police for being people-centred and for reaching out with important messages aimed at sustaining the area's development.

"It is through a strong partnership with Police that we shall be able to contribute to peace and security in our district. Therefore, let us work together and give no room to criminals. Let us come together to fight against crime by providing Police with alerts in case anyone wants to disrupt our security," he said.

RNP conducts similar awareness across the country with the aim of promoting the spirit of partnership to maintaining peace, law and order.

The force also reaches out to Rwandan youth in communities and schools to discuss challenges that may affect them, such as drug abuse, and how to collectively find solutions to such challenges.
