Kirehe residents up against drug dealing

Residents of Nyankurazo village in the Kigarama Sector of Kirehe District have committed themselves to be partners of Rwanda National Police in the fight against drug trafficking, a source of many criminal offences. Some of these offences are in particular domestic violence that plagues a number of families in the area.

The villagers made the commitment to be better partners of RNP Tuesday August 21, during an awareness campaign against drug abuse and gender-based violence in a campaign carried out by Rwanda National Police.

Addressing over 250 Nyankurazo residents, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) in Kirehe District, Inspector of Police (IP) Gahigi Harerimana discussed the negative impacts of consumption of illegal substances, both to the health of individuals, and to the entire society.

An example he talked about was a recent incident in the Nyankurazo Cell whereby a woman was seriously assaulted by her husband after the latter was said to have “consumed a substance”.

Incidents like that are a real problem, said IP Harerimana. “Once there is someone that consumes drugs in the family, the family cannot develop economically or even socially,” he said. The home is always characterized by continuous conflicts leading to assaults and injuries and sometimes even deaths! So, the entire country will be affected! he pointed out.

IP Harerimana asked the resident to join hands with security organs and local leaders in the struggle against drug trafficking as the major root of other crimes. “It’s very simple, just inform in a timely manner your nearest security organs, or your local leaders about those suspected of abusing illegal substances,” Harerimana recommended.

He further advised the people and local leaders to reinforce the night community patrols as a mechanism and better root out crime, or keep it in check.

The residents expressed appreciation of RNC’s efforts, and guaranteed they would play a major role in boosting their own security through timely information sharing, and the recommended night community patrols.

They (Kigarama residents) asked Rwanda National Police officer to schedule more such awareness meets because of how productive they are and how much they gain from them.

Kigarama is one of the Kirehe sectors located at the Rwanda and Tanzania border area. That makes it an ideal place to be the main transit spot for runners or smugglers of illegal substances, like narcotics of illicit brews.
