Residents of Kirehe District have been called upon to strengthen the fight against drug abuse and to report anyone that could be involved in the criminal act.
The call was made by the District Police Commander, Senior Supt. (SSP) Felix Bizimana on March 5, in Nyabikokora cell, Kirehe sector where 214 litres of illicit gin known as Kanyanga, 66 packets of chief waragi and 716 kilogrammes of cannabis were destroyed.
The exercise was also attended by hundreds of area residents who also included motorcycle and bicycle taxi operators and students.
The Kirehe district Police Commander, Senior Sup. (SSP), Felix Bizimana lauded their cooperation with police especially in sharing credible information on wrongdoers but added that there is still need to strengthen the efforts to own the anti-crime campaign.
He reminded them that drug trade and consumption are illegal and punishable under Rwanda Penal Code and a health hazard.
He then called upon anyone that could be involved in this illegal act to abstain and report in time to security organs their colleagues that have kept deaf ears.
The district Mayor, Protais Murayire appealed to the residents to abstain drug dealing, saying its effects have ill-effect on individual development and the country in general.
