Kirehe: Motorcyclists move to penalise defiant members

Over 200 commercial motorcycle operators from 13 cooperatives in Kirehe District met on on January 5 to discuss ways on how they can regulate themselves and impose penalties on some of their own, who tarnish the image of their profession through violation of road traffic rules and involve in illegal activities.

Desire Nsabimana, the head of motorcycle cooperatives in Kirehe, warned members against involving in illegal activities, adding that internal measures will be taken against them.

He further warned them against violation of road traffic rules which leads to injuries and loss of lives.

He urged them to instead be agents of crime prevention and work with Police against any illegal activities.

Supt. Christian Safari, the District Police Commander emphasised the need to respect traffic rules by wearing helmets, reflector jackets, avoid over speeding and operate on when they have a driving licence and insurance for the motorcycle.

He urged them to set up internal guidelines to penalise members, who tarnish the image of the profession.

He further urged them to provide timely information on anyone connected to illegal activities.

"We have in the past arrested some motorcyclists in criminal acts like drug dealings, but we expect this habit to stop. We value you as part of our major partners in crime prevention through community policing," he noted.

The move comes after some motorcyclists in different parts of the country have been apprehended in various illegal activities like facilitating and trafficking narcotics and banned gin like Kanyanga and Chief Waragi, into Rwanda.
