Kigali: Students form Road Safety Club

Students of Kigali Leading School located in Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District formed a Road Safety Club on Friday to support the ongoing national campaign against road carnage.

The club with 300 members was created after Police and members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing sensitized the students and teachers to equally take a central role in changing bad behaviors on road usage, which often result into accidents and loss of lives.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Umutesi, the central region Police spokesperson, thanked the students for the spirit of volunteerism.

She said that such initiatives supplement efforts in behavioural change and fighting lawlessness.

“This club will help to educate other students on road safety rules,” said CIP Umutesi.

She noted that there is a need to create road safety awareness among the young people so as to inculcate the road safety norms themselves and to share messages to their peers, adults friends, relatives and the society at large.

“Our aim is to also create awareness among children at young age so that road safety rules are known and followed. We encourage other schools to establish such clubs so as to promote behavioural change among the young people," CIP Umutesi said.

The exercise is part of the ongoing 52-week road safety campaign dubbed ‘Gerayo Amahoro’.
