KIGALI: Police sensitize pedestrians on Gerayo Amahoro

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on pedestrians to be vigilant and adhere to road safety measures to prevent accidents and loss lives.
While educating pedestrians on Gerayo Amahoro on Monday, June 14, in Remera, Gasabo District, Police urged them to use designated crossings, stay alert, and follow traffic rules to ensure their safety on the roads.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety department, emphasized the importance of understanding and obeying road safety regulations to stay safe.

“We urge all road users to act responsibly and comply with traffic signs, rules, and regulations to protect their own lives and those of others,” he said. “Gerayo Amahoro is not just a campaign—it’s a call to action for everyone to be responsible and respectful when using the road.”

SP Kayigi highlighted the critical role of pedestrian discipline, particularly at zebra crossings. “A zebra crossing is not just paint on the road—it’s a lifeline,” he noted. “Pedestrians must use it properly and avoid distractions, such as using mobile phones or wearing earphones while crossing. Motorists, in turn, must respect pedestrian rights. Everyone has a role to play.”

He added: “As pedestrians, your safety begins with the choices you make. Use crosswalks, observe traffic signals, and stay alert. Never assume that it is safe just because you are at a crosswalk. Look both ways, stay alert for turning vehicles, and be careful. If the traffic light is red, wait for the green—it is worth a few extra seconds. These simple actions can save lives.”

SP Kayigi reminded them to use sidewalks and crosswalks where they exist, and walk on the left side facing oncoming traffic. It is not just about following rules—it’s about ensuring that you see vehicles and motorcycles to react in time in case of unforeseen eventualities,” he said.

He also encouraged the public to report reckless driving: “If you witness dangerous behavior on the road, do not remain silent; report it to the police using our emergency contact numbers.”

The Gerayo Amahoro campaign is a continuous initiative that aims to educate all categories of road users to promote safer road usage and reducing accidents.
