Over 1000 students of Giporoso and Martyrs located in Kanombe Sector of Kicukiro District were recently sensitized on ill-effects associated with abusing narcotic drugs, and urged to report dealers.
While addressing the students, Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Central region Police Spokesperson, enlightened them on common types of contrabands as well as health effects.
He cited cannabis, mayirungi, kanyanga, chief waragi and other gins packed in banned plastic bags as well as locally brewed psychotropic drinks as some of the common drugs.
These drugs are associated with heart, kidney and mental illnesses.
SSP Hitayezu appealed to students to desist from abusing these substances adding that besides being hazardous to users, it is also punishable by the law to make, traffic, sell or use it.
He reminded the students that most of these common narcotic drugs are sneaked into the country from neighboring countries and supplied to different places across the country.
“Drug abuse are a serious security threat in communities; consumers become threat to security in communities through fights and assaulting people, wrecks families and you the children also get affected by the conflicts between your parents, and the end result you decide to leave your homes and go streets where you also find yourselves in such drug related crimes and become thieves," the spokesperson told the students.
“Focus on your education and if anyone tries to introduce you into drug related acts, inform the Police," he said, urging them to report people they suspect to be drug dealers.
