Kicukiro residents hail approach to fight gender violence

Residents in Kicukiro have commended Rwanda National Police’s efforts to prevent Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the district.

The residents said that through stringent awareness against the vice, incidences of gender violence are being reported and addressed in time.

This was during a community meeting held on November 24 in Nyarugunga Sector, which aimed at discussing the consequences of GBV and also draws collective and concrete strategies to further combat it.

“I thank Police for continuous sensitization. I used to mistreat my family members but after Police reached out to use, I became a reformed person and now am a changed person committed to fight domestic and gender based violence,” Olivier Benimana, one of the residents said.

“Through such discussions and awareness, people have understood their role in fighting crimes and gender violence in particular, and we believe the more we meet and put our ideas together the more we become a team against unlawfulness in our community,” he added.

Francoise Mukamana, another resident narrated that he used to define GBV as only rape and defilement, adding through such sensitizations have enlightened her on what  GBV means and her role to fight it.

Inspector of Police (IP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the District Community Liaison Officer commended the residents for their active role in implementing community policing initiatives.

“Rwanda National Police attaches much value on cooperation of different players in crime prevention. Your cooperation with the force has yielded significant achievement as far as arresting suspected criminals is concerned,” IP Twizeyimana said.

IP Twizeyimana urged local leaders to strengthen cooperation with the people and security organs to fight illegal and criminal activities through timely information sharing.
