The mayor of Kicukiro District Dr. Jeanne Nyirahabimana has asked village, cell and sector leaders to work and involve the residents in driving the security and hygiene campaign.

The mayor made the call on January 24 in Nyarugunga Sector with the grassroots leaders on matters related to security, sanitation and hygiene, and the overall implementation of government development programmes to improve the wellbeing of people.

The meeting was also attended by Police, community health workers, heads of health facilities including health centres and hospitals, heads of schools and religious denominations, among others.

The meeting was particularly inline with the joint security and hygiene campaign by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the City of Kigali, which is currently in the second phase of the seventh edition.

“Sanitation and hygiene is a healthy and security concern and one of the factors of people’s wellbeing,” Mayor Nyirahabimana said.

“A sick person is an insecure one; people need to spend their family income in development activities not clearing hospital bills, and that comes to the responsibility of leaders and health experts to guide people and educate them how to live healthy,” she added.

She particularly urged them to monitor and inspect hygiene in places that entertain or receive many people like restaurants, hotels and markets.

The findings of the first phase of the seven edition of the health and hygiene campaign indicated lack of hygiene in some public places.

She further appealed for strengthened community night patrols and community policing committees to fight and prevent crimes.

The campaign also seeks to build stronger and functioning community policing committees, community night patrols, fight drug abuse, domestic violence; noise pollution, sale of alcoholic drinks to minors, fire outbreak, public order management and promote road security.
