Residents of Gahanga sector in Kicukiro district have reviewed security mechanisms to ensure and sustain safety in the area.
The mechanisms include reinforcing night patrols, identifying and helping families with conflicts on how to solve their wrangles to live in harmony, strengthen the fight against drug abuse and other crimes and timely information sharing.
The community security meeting was held September 22 in Rwabutenge cell and attended by the Mayor of the City of Kigali Fidele Ndayisaba and security and local authorities in the district.
Ndayisaba urged residents to be creative and safeguard what has been achieved.
“It is our role to ensure our own security because if we relax, we will be the most affected; our children will be headed to a wrong direction if we let them indulge in drug abuse. As parents, responsible Rwandans, we have to look for ways to make things right for the good of us all,” Epiphane Niyonsaba, one of the residents, said.
Paul Jules Ndamage, the mayor of Kicukiro said security is key to sustainable development and appealed to them to focus towards that and abstain from illegal acts and report those involved in time.
He also appealed to them to own government development policies to improve their well-being.
Inspector of Police (IP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the District Community Liaison Officer said drug abuse, gender and domestic violence and theft are among the common crimes in the area, though they have decreased.
IP noted that there is good cooperation between police and area residents in fighting such crimes, but challenged them to strengthen this partnership by reporting all those that are part of these illegal acts, to be on a preventive side rather than dealing with the consequences.
