Police in Kicukiro District has seized 120 litres of diesel from an illegal dealer in Gahanga Sector. The fuel was seized on Sunday from one Jean Bosco Ntirumenyerwa, who was also taken into custody.
“Some of Ntirumenyerwa’s neighbours in Nunga Cell reported the matter to Police in Gahanga after seeing many people coming to his house to buy fuel,” said Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie-Gorette Umutesi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali.
“Indeed, when Police officers went to Ntirumenyerwa’s house, they found him selling diesel to some of his customers and seized more jerrycans of diesel, which were in the house,” she added.
It is said the fuel was stolen from a Chinese company, which is currently constructing Sonatube-Bugesera road.
“It is not the first time that Ntirumenyerwa has been arrested in this black market business; he was early last year also arrested after he was found selling fuel illegally. It is said that he buys it from people, who steal it from companies constructing roads,” CIP Umutesi explained.
She warned that it is “illegal and dangerous” to sell petroleum products especially diesel, and petrol in your house and thanked the residents for reporting the illegal acts, which she added that it’s also a security issue.
“Under normal circumstances, fuel is supposed to be only sold at authorised dealers, in most cases as petrol stations.”
She said that the operations, which are largely based on credible information from members of the public, are meant to prevent disasters that may arise out of such dangerous businesses. With such inflammables sold at home, she observed that risks of causing fire and killing persons is high.
