Carelessness by some parents and guardians or minding less about their children playing in and around water bodies is one of the causes of drowning, most of the victims being below 18 years of age.
Water bodies including lakes, streams and rivers, pose a serious danger to children. The Rwanda National Police appeals to families residing near these water bodies to keep an open eye and take precautions to prevent drowning.
On November 15, a three-year old baby girl drowned in a water pond in Sahari cell of Busogi sector in Musanze District and died instantly.
It is alleged that the tot was not attended too at the time.
Children need constant parental attention and monitoring. They should not be abandoned or allowed to play in and around water bodies.
Such ponds, ditches should also be closed to prevent such disasters.
