Kayonza residents urged to fight drug abuse

Rwanda National Police reached out to residents of Kayonza District and called for proactive actions against drug abuse and trafficking, in order to promote community safety and security.

The message was relayed by the Eastern province Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi during a sensitization campaign that was presided over by the mayor of Kayonza district  and attracted residents, local leaders and law enforcers in the district.

The Mayor of Kayonza, John Mugabo, noted that alcoholism and drug abuse should be discouraged because they are detrimental to the health and future of the young generation, and urged youth to concentrate on activities that build their nation rather than indulge in drug abuse.

He also commended Rwanda national Police for complimenting law enforcement with community policing initiatives that discourage criminality

In his remarks, IP Kayigi noted that drug abuse is an issue that can be addressed effectively at the community level, by involving the youth and elders to pursue activities focused on a positive, healthy lifestyle that do not  security and  law.

“Youth from every community learn from their mentors, peers, neighbors, and friends. Therefore, elders should become involved and be exemplary to the younger generation by not indulging in any drug abuse related acts,” he said.

“Every community should promote activities that influence individuals to make choices against drug dealers"

He also called on local leaders to build strong partnerships with residents, law enforcers and with other community groups in order to work towards the same goal, and to gather a greater source of information that can be shared with police in order to collectively fight against narcotics.

Residents who attended the campaign pledged to always cooperate with police in identifying drug dealers and providing timely information as part of their role in overcoming drug abuse.
