The Vice Mayor of Kayonza District in Charge of Economic Affairs, Hope Munganyinka has reminded residents to embrace the proactive practice of Neighbourhood Watch to fight and prevent lawlessness, and ensure safety and security in their localities.
She explained that Neighborhood Watch brings together people of the same community to make their neighborhood safer.
Munganyinka made the call recently while addressing about 1500 residents of Murama Sector.
The community meeting discussed matters related to security and development.
The vice mayor observed that development can be attained in a safer and secure environment where people put their ideas and hands together to fight crimes and jointly improve the overall quality of life.
She mentioned that safety, security and peace are a joint responsibility for every citizen and that Neighbourhood Watch and Irondo--community night patrols--were developed for every community to address its local security challenges.
The meeting discussed several community issues but emphasised community policing and active involvement in development activities like Umuganda, paying medical insurance, social activities like Umugoroba w'ababyeyi.
Munganyinka appealed to grassroots leaders to always resolve family problems before escalating into violence.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Ingabire, the District Political and Civic Education Officer for Kayonza, thanked the residents for their community policing efforts to fight and prevent crimes.
CIP Ingabire, however, singled out illicit drugs, Gender Based Violence and child pregnancies as some of the crimes that should be given emphasis to fight and prevent.
She also enlightened them on safer usage of the road and reminded them to always use the road cautiously so as to prevent accidents that often consume people's lives and property.
