Residents of Kayonza District have been urged to enhance their contribution towards crime prevention particularly through timely information sharing with security organs.
The call was made by the District Police Commander (DPC), Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Octave B. Mutembe, while addressing residents during an anti-crime awareness held recently.
The DPC asked them to play a significant role in reporting cases of theft in the district.
He further urged them to have ownership in community safety by sharing timely information that lead to arrest of suspected criminals.
“The partnership between security agencies and members of the general public is so important, and has significantly contributed to remarkable peace and security in the country - an aspect which has branded Rwanda as being one the few world’s safest countries,” CIP Mutembe said.
He also reminded them to always step out courageously and report all security related offences, including trafficking of illicit drugs, theft among others.
“Most narcotic drugs mainly cannabis are sneaked into the country and transported to other parts of the country through Kayonza,” he observed, as he alerted residents to always share information on those suspected to be involved.
“Narcotic drugs pose a serious security threat in communities but the substances also have multiple negative effects on life, which include mental disabilities, which is also a security issue that we should all work together to prevent,” CIP Mutembe added.
During the meeting, the vice mayor in charge of social affairs, Jean Damascene Harerimana thanked Police’s continued awareness campaigns to change he mindset of residents and to have them involved in different security and development programmes.
He reminded residents that, security is a basis for sustainable development and improved family welfare in particular.
