Kayonza: Police breaks motorcycle theft ring

Three people said to be part of the same ring that steals motorcycles, have been arrested in Kayonza District.

Jean Bosco Gatare, Issa Sebazungu and Cyiza Boy were arrested on February 4 in Rukara Sector with two stolen motorcycles and other items.

The motorcycles; RC 831V and RB 046Y both belonging to one Victor Kubwimana, were stolen on January 23 in Gatsibo District.

“There were arrested red-handed in Rukara Village with the two stolen motorcycles in an operation conducted by the Police and local leaders, after residents reported the trio and got suspicious of their actions,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobard Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.

“We also recovered bicycles and their spare parts, and mattresses in the house where they were hiding, which were also reportedly stolen from different people but we are yet to identify the rightful owners; investigations are still underway,” he added.

He commended the vigilance of the residents adding that “if you suspect someone to be involved in an illegal act, don’t hesitate to inform security organs or local leaders, and let us confirm your suspicions.”

Theft under article 300 of the penal code attracts a prison sentence of between six months and two years, and a fine of two to five times the value of what was stolen.
