Kayonza: Man arrested over money counterfeit

Police in Kayonza District, on Friday, arrested a man in connection with money counterfeit.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson in Eastern region, the suspect identified as Joseph Misago, 52, was arrested in Mukarange Sector in possession of eleven fake notes in denominations of Rwf5, 000.

“Misago was buying goods in Kayonza town and when he paid for the goods, the seller realized that the note is fake, then he called the Police. At the time of his arrest, Misago was found in possession of fake notes amounting to Rwf55, 000,” he said.

He added: “Misago couldn't disclose the origin of that money. He was handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at Mukarange Station for further investigations.”

CIP Twizeyimana warned against such tendencies of dealing in counterfeit currencies and called for vigilance and partnership in identifying and arresting individuals involved.

He further appealed to the general public to always be vigilant when receiving money.

“The general public, especially the business community are advised to always check the currency notes thoroughly to fight and prevent such financial crimes, which have ill-impact on their businesses and the economy in general.”

“The effects of counterfeit to a trader are grave as they could easily lead them out of business. This is why we continuously request the public to be cautious about fake money.”

Article 269 of the penal code states: “Any person who, fraudulently counterfeits, falsifies or alters coins or bank notes which are legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, notes issued by the Treasury with its stamp or brand, either banknotes or alike that have legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, or one who introduces or issues in Rwanda such effects or notes with knowledge that they are forged or falsified, commits an offence.

Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than five (5) years and not more than seven (7) years.
