The acting District Police Commander of Kayonza, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Octave Mutembe held a meeting with heads of motorcycle cooperatives and their members in Kayonza, and appealed to them to reorganize and streamline their operations.
CIP Mutembe observed that poor management within cooperatives is a major concern which some members seize to indulge in unlawful acts and violate traffic rules and regulations.
“You should have internal guidelines first; know if your members have driver’s license before you admit them. Follow their conduct to know those indulging in unlawful acts like facilitating criminality including drug dealers,” CIP Mutembe said.
He also reminded the motorcyclists that they are equally custodians of the law and community policing in particular, and urged them to watch out for each other and share with the police information on either their colleagues or people involved in unlawful acts.
“Be hygienic at all times, don’t transport drug dealers or any other wrongdoer, but rather report them; also respect road safety standards; ride only when you have a license, wear a helmet for your safety, and avoid speeding and bad maneuvers, which cause fatal accidents,” the DPC told motorcyclists.
Motorcyclists are among the majority either involved or cause accidents, according to road traffic reports.
The motorcyclists, who pledged support in safety and security efforts, however, requested that their station be put in a strategic place where they can easily get passengers. Currently, their stage, they say is far in about 800 meters from the bus terminal.
