Intensified police operations against drug related crimes in Kayonza District led to the arrest of another drug dealer on Saturday.
The arrest of Theogene Muhirwa, 37, came a day after two other suspected drug dealers were also apprehended in the same district with at least 30kgs of cannabis.
Police said Muhirwa was intercepted in Gasabo Village of Kiyovu Cell in Ndego Sector with at least 12kgs of cannabis, Inspector of Police (IP) Bosco Dusabe, Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.
The narcotics well concealed in a sack, he added.
“Ndego Police station had earlier received information from a resident, who suspected Muhirwa to be involved in drug related crimes,” the spokesperson said.
“In partnership with local leaders and the residents, police conducted a target operation in the area, and found Muhirwa with 12kgs of cannabis; he was immediately taken into custody and currently detained at Ndego Police station pending further investigations and processing of his dossier to prosecution for further judicial proceedings,” IP Dusabe said.
“Like in other parts of the country, police in Kayonza has intensified operations and awareness campaigns against drug related crimes, and these are positive outcomes,” he observed.
Drug related crimes re punishable under articles 593 to 598 of the Rwandan penal code.
Under article 594, to trafficking, selling or consuming illicit drugs attracts a term of imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million.
