Over 200 people involved in the public transport business in Karongi District, including commercial motorcyclists, cyclists and sailors operative in Lake Kivu have recommitted to enhancing community policing measures to prevent crimes.
They made the commitment after a meeting with police and district authorities recently.
The meeting held in Bwishyura Sector, focused on collective role to prevent crimes through upholding community policing philosophy.
In his address to the transporters, the Mayor of Karongi, Francois Ndayisaba, described transportation activities in the district as being key in bolstering family welfare in particular and the national economic prosperity in general.
“The economic prosperous around the country and of course this kind of environment where people are able to freely operate business at any time, is all because of security Rwandans continue to enjoy, and which should be sustained, ” said Ndayisaba.
He called for more commitment by transporters to partner with security agencies to prevent any criminal activity.
“For this security to be maintained, and for the district to achieve more development goals, every Rwandan particularly transporters, need to come on board, share timely information with security agencies to ensure that, criminal activities are deterred and suspects are arrested,” he added.
The Mayor also challenged transporters to always strive to offer quality services to their clients.
During the meeting, the District Police Commander, Senior Superintendent (SP), Eric Kanyabuganza thanked transporters’ role in facilitating movements of people and goods to different destinations.
He, however, warned them against transportation of narcotic drugs and appealed to them to be more cautious about passenger’s baggage, and quickly share information whenever they become suspicious of some passengers.
He also urged to them to respect all road traffic rules to prevent road accidents
