Karongi: Students tipped on road safety rules

Students of Groupe Scolaire Ruragwe in Kamonyi district were on August 14 sensitized on road safety rules and urged to always observe both sides of the road before crossing.

Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Rutebuka, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) appealed to the students to use pedestrian walkways and Zebra crossings to avoid being hit by the likely speeding vehicle.

“Teaching students about road usage enables them to know, at early age, the best ways of road safety to avoid being hit or killed by passing automobiles,” IP Rutebuka said.

He further cautioned them against involving in other criminal acts like drug abuse.

He also told them to beware of people who try to trick them with empty promises when actually they want to traffic them for dirty and hard labour jobs.

IP Rutebuka urged the students to report whoever may abuse their rights and force them to child labor and physical assault.

He as well appealed to the school administration to always teach pupils the meaning of road signs.

"The lessons are vital to spare not only students but also all road users from accidents,” Elias Mukurarinda, the school headteacher, said.

He suggested that such an exercise be conducted periodically and should benefit all schools.
