About 1.000 litres of illicit brew have been seized in a police operation in Karongi District.
and many arrested for their involvement in the illegal trade.
According to the Western region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, during the operation conducted on September 15, in Rubengera Sector, six people were arrested in connection with the act.
He identified the suspects as Ziripa Mukasugira, 28, Shakira Uwamahoro, 30, Desire Nshyimana 20, Iddi Musabyimana, 33, Anastase Ndahimana, and Umuhoza Vestine 32; all from Kibirizi Cell in Rubengera Sector.
“This, like many other successful operations, was informed by information provided by residents,” CIP Kanamugire said, commending the existing partnership with the public in crime detection and prevention.
The seized substances were disposed of in presence of hundreds of residents to signal intolerance and warning against anyone involved in such unlawful acts.
“These substances are dangerous... the raw materials, composition as well as the alcohol content pose danger to consumers. We have witnessed that in families where it has influenced conflicts, fighting and even mental effects,” he observed.
The spokesperson said that operations to crackdown on distillers, traffickers, sellers and consumers of illicit drugs will continue and appealed to the public to report anyone they suspect to be connected to these high impact crimes.
