Karongi residents sensitized on dangers of corruption

Residents of Karongi District have been urged to contribute towards the fight against corruption and bribery by collaborating with Rwanda National Police (RNP) in advancing values of national development.

The message was delivered on October 23 by the Police Spokesperson for Western Province, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira along with the Executive Secretary of Gashari Sector, Nicolas Karasanyi.

This was in light of a bribery incident, where two suspects approached Karasanyi with a bribe of Rwf600, 000 in order to let them cut timber from a forested area that is protected by government.

The two residents of Gashari Sector, Tharccisse Uwitonze and Celestin Kamana were arrested red-handed by police, after Karasanyi had alerted police of their intentions to offer him a bribe.

They are currently held at Gashari Police Station pending further investigations.

In his message to the public, Karasanyi noted that such corruption incidences only serve to drag the nation backwards despite the significant achievements that have been made over the years.

“Those who still believe in offering or receiving bribes are blind to the common vision that Rwandans have decided to pursue together, led by the visionary leader of our President,” Karasanyi said.

“We need to say no to corruption and work together with law enforcers to uproot such malpractices from society. A developing society like Rwanda should always pursue national goals without being derailed by negative practices like corruption.”

IP Gasasira commended individuals who denounce bribes be it in public or private spheres, and called upon residents to hold on to their role in tackling the vice.

“Always use the right channels if you want a service or goods. Do not fall into the temptation of corruption by offering or accepting bribes, which is a crime,” IP Gasasira said.

RNP maintains a zero-stance to corruption and partners with other institutions like the Ombudsman Office, Transparency International and the general public to fight graft.
