The vice Mayor of Karongi District in charge of Economic Development, Esperance Bagwire has challenged opinion leaders of Mubuga Sector to be exemplary in crime prevention.
She made the call on August 15 during a meeting that brought together local leaders and police officers to draw strategies on how best to enhance neighborhood watch.
“Crimes like drug abuse can be prevented if you remain closer to the public especially the youth and forge strong partnership with security organs,” said Bagwire.
She reminded them that effective and timely information sharing is one of the best strategies for crime prevention.
“Mubuga has three cells that are connecting to Lake Kivu; in the interest of security, you should ensure you know which people are coming in your neighborhoods,” said the vice mayor.
She outlined corruption, gender based violence and drug abuse as high impact crimes that they should give emphasis.
“These crimes are avoidable if we commit to collectively fight them,” said the vice mayor.
The meeting was also attended by the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Rutebuka, who urged opinion leaders to intensify public sensitization in crime prevention with particular focus on fighting consumption of illicit substance.
IP Rutebuka further reminded opinion leaders to encourage parents to keep children in school and also be active participants in government development programmes.
