Residents of Karongi District have been reminded to embrace the community policing initiative of ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ to be an eye for their neighbors and ensure their own security while reporting families that could be facing internal disputes.
François Ndayisaba, the Mayor of Karongi made the call on December 8 while meeting with over 1500 residents of Mubuga and Gishyita sectors.
The meeting aimed at discussing various issues affecting them and their role in community policing.
Ndayisaba reminded the residents that security is the foundation to which they stand, adding that it’s the only ground to which sustainable development can be attained.
"That’s why protecting what has been achieved requires being there for each other and to fight what can take us back or hamper your progress,” Ndayisaba said.
He thanked Rwanda National Police for consistently reaching out to the people, and appealed to the residents to always put into action what they are told to fight and prevent what can affect their well-being.
Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Rutebuka, the District Community Liaison Officer of Karongi echoed the same message noting that ensuring security is the “responsibility of everyone because insecurity doesn’t separate.”
He reminded them to enjoy the forth coming festivities responsibly, putting into consideration the likelihood of law-breakers taking chance to implement their illegal plans.
“As you enjoy the festive period with family and friends, remember that wrongdoers also try to seize this opportunity to break into houses to steal. You should be vigilant at all times, continue to be strong partners in crime prevention through community policing.”
“What affects your neighbor today might affect you another day, so always work together, be an eye for your neighbours and be quick to share information with police, community policing committees, local leaders and even amongst yourselves. That way, we will jointly contain criminality and ensure that law-breakers are arrested to face justice,” he added.
He further reminded them to be keen on fighting drug dealing which fuel criminality and tear families apart.
