The Imam of the Western region, Sheikh Hamad Iyakaremye has urged the Muslim youth in Karongi District to live by the Islamic faith and beliefs, and desist from all illegal and criminal acts.
While addressing over one hundred youth including students currently in holidays, sheikh Iyakaremye reminded the young generation that abusing illicit drugs and extremism are against the Islamic faith.
“Don’t be misled from attaining your education and development dreams. Abusing illicit drugs or dealing in psychotropic substances, and engaging in extremism acts are criminal. As Rwandan youth, you are expected to act exemplary and partner with security organs to fight all sorts of unlawful acts,” Sheikh Iyakaremye told the youth.
The District Police Commander (DPC) of Karongi, Supt. Emmanuel Karuranga urged them to be agents of community policing by reporting by reporting drug dealers.
He reminded them that dealing or abusing drugs has repercussions including arrest and imprisonment, luring them out of school and forcing them into other criminal activities like theft as means to get money to buy drugs.
He also enlightened them on human trafficking and took them through some of the tricks used to lure unsuspecting people especially girls into the modern-day slavery including deceit.
The meeting was also attended by coordinators of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (YVCP) in the district and sectors of Karongi, who also urged the youth to join the organization to raise their voice and actions in transforming the country.
There are about 230, 000 members of the youth organization across the country, with about 5, 200 in Karongi.
The youth volunteers’ group was formed in 2013 by students and graduates, and is actively involved in community policing and human security activities.
