Superintendent of Police (SP) Jean Pierre Gatabazi the Karongi District Police Commander (DPC) has warned fishermen on Lake Kivu to desist from conducting illegal business.
The District Police commander also urged fishermen and those involved in the transportation for goods and persons to wear water protective gear such as life jackets.
Supt Gatabazi was speaking yesterday to over 100 fishermen on Lake Kivu in Bwishyura sector flanked by the sector executive secretary Phanuel Uwimana.
He asked fishermen to desist from fishing habits that may exhaust fish stocks by way of using proper fishing nets, warning that those caught will be punished.
“We will use the laws to increase fish in the lake while on other hand punishing some fishermen involved in illegal fishing”, CIP Karekezi said.
ES Uwimana, on the other hand, noted that some fishermen go to the lake at night using small nets. Uwimana, however, explained that incidences of illegal fishing have been low in recent times compared to the same time last year.
The DPC went on to say that among those who lost their lives due to drowning include children.
Police also urged residents to avoid crossing flooded rivers during the day or at night when the weather is turbulent and not to allow children to go swimming, fishing or playing around bodies of water such, streams and rivers.
