Commercial cyclists in Karongi District have been urged to be active in community policing activities and partner with the Police to fight and prevent crimes.
While addressing about 120 members of COTAVOKA, a cooperative of cyclists in Karongi, on April 30, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Aimable Rutayisire, reminded them that fighting crime and ensuring safety is the responsibility of all Rwandans.
He, however, thanked them for their will in promoting safety. AIP Rutayisire reminded them that safety and security is the foundation of their wellbeing and development.
“The way you handle yourselves on roads… riding safely, respecting traffic rules and registrations is critical to ensure safety and security of every road user,” AIP Rutayisire told the cyclists.
“There are also people in your communities, or those you transport, who are involved in unlawful acts like trafficking and selling narcotic drugs,” he said.
He emphasized the need to work together to identify and share information on drug dealers or consumers.
He also urged them to always ensure that their bikes are in good condition to prevent fatal accidents that might arise out of mechanical faults.
Jean Pierre Ndikubwabo, the head of COTAVOKA, also told his members that their future starts with being safe and secure.
Ndikubwabo thanked the Police for reaching out to them, and appealed to his members to desist from any unlawful acts especially dealing or abusing narcotic drugs, and to work with the Police to identify and arrest anyone they suspect to be involved in any unlawful dealings.
