A woman suspected to have been running kanyanga (illicit gin) distillery in Huye District was arrested by Police on February 24.
Joselyne Nyiraneza was arrested red-handed at her home located in Kinazi Village, Rucyira Cell of Huye District where she was operating the unlawful brewery that distils the gin classified as a psychotropic substance under article 24 of the law on narcotics and precursors in Rwanda.
Chief Inspector of Police(CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region said that Nyiraneza, 45, currently detained at Ngoma Police station was caught with quantities of Kanyanga which she had already distilled.
"She was found in the act distilling the illicit gin after residents called in the Police at Ngoma Police station," CIP Karekezi said.
Police also seized raw materials and equipment she was using to make the substance.
The spokesperson thanked thw resident, who exercised his community policing rights to report the criminal act.
He called for continued information sharing against drug dealers and any unlawful acts.
