Youths from Kamonyi District have vowed to use information sharing and public awareness in fighting against drug abuse in their communities.
The youngsters made the commitment during an anti-crime seminar held recently at Kamonyi district’s Youth centre to revise their role in community safety.
Prior to the meeting hundreds of youths held walk against drug abuse where they carried placards displaying dangers of drug abuse and calling for a collective action against the vice.
In his address, the District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean Baptiste Irabaruta pointed out that the effects of drug abuse are disheartening since families and societies are wrecked.
“Some young people have made the wrong choice of getting involved in drug abuse and trafficking and this menace their lives and families. Some have dropped out of school or started living a life of crime,” said CIP Irabaruta.
Drugs and alcoholism, according to CIP Irabaruta, are recorded as the most causes of crimes such as burglary, rape, murder, violence and child abuse among others.
“Let us all protect our families and our nation by reporting to Police immediately whenever such cases occur," he added.
He noted that young people abuse drugs in places where they are least supervised including on their way home, during weekends while at school before calling on parents and adults to setup their parenting duties.
Tharcille Kayumba the district youth coordinator faulted parents for lack of proper supervision and role-modeling.
“Often time teenagers and young adults are influenced by peer pressure into alcohol and drugs,” she noted.
In a related development, coordinated but separate police operations in different places of the country led to the arrest of three people and seizure of over 300 pellets of cannabis.
The operations which happened in Nyamagabe, Ngororero and Rubavu districts apprehended Rose Mary Ndayishimiye, Bonaventure Hareriman and Emmanuel Simbizi respectively.
