The Mayor of Kamonyi District Aimable Udahemuka has urged over 200 members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing- (RYVCP) in the district to take a lead in protecting and advancing rights of children.
The Mayor made remarks in a meeting held on July 26 in Gacurabwenge Sector which was also attended by the District Police Commander Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Ndahimana Gisanga.
“You should use your influence to ensure no child drops out of school; whenever you encounter cases of child labour inform the security organs immediately,” said Udahemuka.
During the meeting, CIP Ndahimana tutored youth volunteers on major violation of children rights and their role in fighting such violence.
He went on also to detailed effects of drug abuse saying that most crimes like child abuse and Gender Based Violence are normally connected to drug abuse.
Some of the key child abuse cases, according to CIP Ndahimana include verbal assault, child labor, defilement and denying them a right to go to school.
“Such kind of mistreat affect the growth of a child that’s why, if we want to have productive generations in future, we have to collectively ensure that we fight against crimes like child abuse and drug abuse.”
He hinted on the importance of sharing information, saying that, “as Youth Volunteers, you should encourage the public to always share information wherever they encounter any form of violation or abuse.”
He reminded them that Rwanda National Police has a toll free line for any child abuse incident which is 116.
During the same meeting, RYVCP commissioner in charge of training, Jean Bosco Mutangana reminded his colleagues to always be men and women of integrity in their communities as well as be the eyes and ears of the police.
