Kamonyi: Umugoroba w'ababyeyi creating impact

Residents Ruramba village of Rugarika Sector in Kamonyi District say that the community social cohesion locally known as Umugoroba w'ababyeyi is playing a vital role in crime prevention and creating a strong bond in security and development. 

Jean Baptiste Muvunyi, the village leader, said the community gathering that mainly brings together parents and elders in general, has been advantageous in reuniting families, discussing security issues that requires immediate attention.

"It's a good moment to discuss security and welfare issues and as a result come up with joint solutions needed for the entire village to make steps further in terms of ensuring our community safety and implementation of development programmes," Muvunyi says.

“Residents of this village have realized the importance of such meetings, they turn up in big numbers and this has helped to jointly resolve some family wrangles, domestic violence or GBV, identify drug dealers and abusers and report them to security organs," he added.

The village chief also said that the Visitor’s Book that helps to register new comers helps them to know everyone in their community and to identify any wrongdoers

“We have realized that some people after committing crimes in other places and try to hide in other places, and it's easier to identify such people through this set up."

The District Police Commander of Kamonyi, 

Supt. Marc Minani, also lauded the impact of Umugoroba w'ababyeyi in driving the philosophy of community policing.

The acting Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Prisca Uwamahoro, also commended residents of Ruramba village for setting an good example in the entire district to fight and prevent crimes, build harmonious families and improve the welfare. 

She appealed to the residents to do more and always embrace neighborhood watch to prevent crimes particularly child pregnancies, illicit drug trade and gender based violence.
