Kamonyi: Residents warned against illicit brew

Police in Kamonyi District have appealed to residents of Musambira sector to desist from the production of illicit alcohol, drug abuse and other conducts that may lead them to conflicts with the law.

They were instead told to share  information with law enforcers on whoever is involved in any unlawful conduct for legal action.

The call was made recently by Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi the southern region police spokesperson after police arrested four drug traders and seized over 500 liters of illicit brew found being processed by residents.

Police arrested one person identified as Ndagijimana, Police also seized 170 pellets during the operation conducted in Kivumu cell, Nyerenga Village on February 7.

“We are looking for another suspect identified as Clarisse Gasengayire alleged to be the owner of the drugs,” said CIP Karekezi.

The spokesperson thanked the general public for their community policing spirit in fighting crimes and relaying credible information that leads to the arrest of drug traffickers.

The strengthened Police operations and countrywide awareness campaigns against narcotic drugs are aimed at breaking chains of supply.

Under the new penal code, especially in its article 163, anyone convicted for producing, transforming, transporting, storing, giving to another or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances faces a penalty of up to life in prison and a fine of up to Rwf30 million.
