Kamonyi: Police dispose of 150L of illicit brew

Police in Kamonyi have cautioned residents of Bugari village against brewing alcohols illegally because the laws will always catch-up with them.

Police said every effort continues to be made to sensitize residents advising them to desist from lawlessness and those that remain adamant have everything to lose.

The remarks were made recently by the Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Southern region police spokesperson while speaking to hundreds of Rukoma sector in Bugari village at the occasion to publically dispose of 150 liters of unhygienic locally made brews known as Muriture.

During the public meeting, police unveiled residents found brewing the alcohols and their utensils.

He urged local leaders to at all-time report such individuals to police or to their superiors in the local government hierarchy.

Illegal alcohol is termed by laws as “any liquid substance that contains more than 0.5 percent of methanol in its composition is not supposed to be taken because it is deemed harmful to the health,” said CIP Karekezi.

"We must know its composition as well as the alcohol content; such products must have been cleared by relevant authorities without which there is no leeway to buy and sell prohibited drinks” he added.

Officials told area residents to desist from consuming such psychotropic substances, to prevent causing ill health to unwitting drinker.

Excessive abuse of alcohol and drug misuse has been blamed for most gender based violence and violence against children incidents in the community.
