KAMONYI: Police arrest 12 in operations against drug dealers and illegal sell of petroleum products

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has arrested 12 people in Kamonyi District, Gacurabwenge Sector in overnight operations conducted on Friday night and wee hours of Saturday morning, targeting groups involved in various criminal activities.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said that those arrested include seven suspected drug dealers, three people, who were selling petroleum products on the black market, and two others, who were producing and selling illicit brew.

At least 480 litres of fuel (460 litres of petrol and 20 litres of diesel) were seized from the five illegal dealers in Kigembe, Gacurabwenge Sector.

"These were joint operations conducted by the Police, local leaders and other security organs targeting specific homes and individuals suspected of selling cannabis as well as those either buying or stealing petroleum products, which they sell on black market in Gacurabwenge," said SP Kanamugire.

He explained that the names of those arrested were compiled with the help of local leaders and residents.

"These are operations targeting drug dealers, suspected thieves, those selling petroleum products on the black market and producers of assorted illicit alcoholic drinks," the spokesperson explained.

It is suspected that the petrol and diesel is either stolen from trucks or sold to them by truck drivers.

Only people with a license from a competent authority in Rwanda are authorised to trade in petroleum and petroleum products trade.

The law specifies the safety of petroleum products with respect to conditions related to ?stores and other places exclusively reserved for the parking of petroleum and petroleum products tankers? determined by the competent authority,? to prevent causing accidents.
