Kamonyi: Man arrested over circulating counterfeit currencies

Police in Kamonyi district is holding a man identified as Theoneste Ndayisaba for allegedly circulating counterfeit currencies.

The suspect was arrested on July 22, in Mikamba Village of Mbati Cell in Mugina Sector of Kamonyi District. Upon his arrest , Ndayisaba was found in possession of Frw 35,000 fake paper notes in 5000 denominations.

The Southern Region Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Emmanuel Kayigi, confirmed the arrest and hastened to warn residents against such malpractices.

CIP Kayigi said, the suspect was arrested as he tried to buy fruits from a local farmer in Mikamba Village.

“The would-be victim became suspicious of the money he had received from Ndayisaba in exchange for the fruits. He rushed to notify the Police who immediately intervened and arrested the suspect,” Kayigi narrated.

The suspect is currently detained at Mugina Police Station as the Rwanda Investigation Bureau is carrying out investigation into his case.

Article 603 of the penal code sets a jail term of one to three years for anyone involved in such acts.
