Kamonyi: Man arrested for attempting to bribe Police officer

A commercial motorcyclist identified as Valens Habanabakize was taken into custody on March 27 in Kamonyi District in connection with attempting to bribe a Police officer.

The bribe was meant to unlawfully influence the officer to release Habanabakize's motorcycle, which had been impounded over road traffic related offences.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said that the suspect was found riding the motorcycle RD 422I, without a driver's permit and transport authorisation license.

Any motorcycle used to transport people is supposed to have authorisation license offered by Rwanda Utility Regulatory Authority (RURA).

Equally, no one should drive or ride a motorcycle without a driver's license.

"The motorcycle was impounded recently after Habanabakize, who was riding it at the time, was found without the required documents, and he was served with the legal penalties," CIP Karekezi said.

He added: "Instead of clearing the penalties he came back three days later, approached the officer and tried to seduce him with a bribe of Rwf20, 000 so as to have his motorcycle unlawfully released, he was immediately arrested over the crime."

"The officer tried to educate him on the legal process of bailing his motorcycle but Habanabakize kept a deaf ear and continued to seduce him with a bribe which prompted the arrest."

He warned against bribery adding that "no one will be tolerated for either giving or soliciting bribes."

The spokesperson advised the general public to respect the law, do the right thing and go through the legal process in requesting any service instead of taking the unlawful and criminal channel.
