Kamonyi: Illicit brew destroyed, two arrested

Police in Kamonyi district, on November 14 impounded and destroyed 540 litres of a locally made illicit brew called Merase.

The public destruction was attended by area residents,  local leaders and officials from judiciary.

The illicit brew were seized in a joint operation conducted in Kababyeyi cell of Nyarubaka sector.

Chief Supt. Hubert Gashagaza, the Southern region Police Spokesperson said the brew was recovered. In three homes belonging to one Vedaste Mudaheranwa, Sylvester Kamari and Marakiya Musabyimana.

Mudaheranwa and Kamari were arrested and currently detained at Kamonyi Police station while Musabyimana is still on the run, Chief Supt. Gashagaza said.

“We are seeing a tremendous downward trend in drug abuse, but our target is to have a society free of illicit drugs and narcotics; the role of the public in this campaign is paramount by reporting anyone involved,” CSP Gashagaza said.

He lauded the area residents for the information which led to the seizure of the illicit brew and subsequent arrest of the suspected dealers.

The law governing narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Rwanda, in its article 24, states that “any drink that exceeds forty five percent of alcohol and any other drink which doesn't have the required quality for consumption shall be considered as narcotic drug.”
