Kamonyi and Burera District Police Units, on June 10 organized activities to educate road users on safe road usage.

The exercise attracted drivers, commercial motorcyclists, pupils, students, cyclists and residents.

In Kamonyi, the district Mayor Jacques Rutsinga, who presided over the event, appealed to drivers to revise their behavior and respect roadside safety signs.

“Sensitizing, educating and reminding Rwandans on proper and safer usage of roads will improve security on roads. It’s time for Rwandans to change their mindset, respect traffic rules and save lives,” he said.

Inspector of Police Celestin Haguma, the District Police Commander noted that recklessness and over speeding have been among major causes of accidents.

In Burera, the same messages were echoed to the public where they were also reminded of their rights to safety and to report drivers who attempt to put their lives at risk.

Burera mayor Samuel Sembagare and DPC CIP Jean Bosco Mugabo attended the activity.

In both separate awareness events, students and other road users were given practical lessons on how to cross the road and  the meaning of roadside signs.

Some of the students and pupils were also give basic skills on how to stop vehicles or motorcycles when their colleagues are crossing the road.

He reminded them to also utilize the Rwanda National Police services like toll free lines – 112 for emergency, 113 for road accidents and 3511 – to report those who breach traffic rules and endanger lives of others.
