A joint operation between Rwanda National Police (RNP), and Rwanda Bureau of Investigations (RIB) officers has seized 1180 pellets of Cannabis in Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu the Central Region police spokesperson, the operation was conducted on August 18 in Jabana and Gahanga sectors. That was after police was tipped off that some people from the two sectors were involved in selling drugs, especially to young people.
SSP Hitayezu said that in Gitenga Village of the Jabana Sector officers seized 802 pellets of the marijuana from one Consolee Mukasakute 48, who had been earlier identified by members of the public as a notorious distributor of the drug.
378 more pellets were seized from Gahanga from the house of a man only identified as Alex who has gone into hiding. “We shall not relent until the drug traffickers turn away from their illegal activities,” said Hitayezu after the operation. “Those who persist should be ready to face the full force of the law, because their day will come.”
He hailed community members who inform authorities of the whereabouts of the suspect criminals, something he said is a sign that the community-policing concept is very effective in maintaining the law.
“The arrests of these people followed tip offs we received from the public that guided our successful operations. We appreciate this partnership and continue to encourage people to provide information whenever they suspect or witness any crime,” said SSP Hitayezu.
He, however pointed out that traffickers keep changing tricks but lauded the role of community policing in unearthing such tricks, leading to apprehension of suspects.
Similar operations have been held in different parts of the country and resulted into the arrests of several traffickers in addition to seizure of their deadly merchandise.
