It is high time miners took more precaution

Due to the unique dangers associated with mining operations, workers need extensive safety precautions and standard training on how to indulge in the activity of mining.

Yet in some instances, these precautions and skills have sometimes been ignored for the sake of profit, therefore leading to fatal accidents.

On January 20 in Muhororo Sector, Ngororero District, a 22 year old man identified as Pascal Twagirayezu died from a collapsed mine, while another 55 year old Theogene Ruribikyiye, sustained serious injuries and is currently under treatment.

The same happened on the previous day, in Musasa Sector, Rutsiro District, when two miners working for Kuaka Mining Company were killed by suffocation when gas coming from inside a mine chocked them. Officials say that these victims were not wearing gas masks while they mined.

In Nyamashekye District, two people died and one injured when they were buried alive by debris while they were trying to extract coltan from a mine.
Still on the same day, in Muhanga Sector, Muhanga Disitrt, a young man of 24 years was killed when land collapsed on him while trying to extract minerals for Komal Mining Company.

This disturbing trend is proof enough that it is mandatory for mining companies to provide miners with safety gear such as gloves, gas masks and helmets are as well as inspect the mines for safety precautions before they give a green light to those seeking to carry out the activity.

“It is important for each mine to approve worker training program in health and safety issues as well as basic safety training for new miners with no experience. On top of that, mining owners must provide safety gear to protect the miners when they are doing their work,” Western Province Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu said.

He also urged investors to educate their staff about common efforts of governments designed to prevent mining accidents, and sensitize them about national laws that protect the environment.

With the increase technology, it is important for mine concession owners to invest in standards personal protective equipments, including adequate radio communication devices or safety lamps that won't potentially trigger explosives atmospheres.

It is also important to protect the mining areas against activities of illegal miners which increase the risk of mining accidents and environment hazards.

Article 438 of the penal code stipulates that any person who undertakes illegal research or illegally carries out commercial activities in valuable minerals, shall be liable to imprisonment of six months to one year and a fine of Rwf3 million to Rwf10 million or one of these penalties.
