Members of the community night patrol – Irondo – in Kimisagara Sector in Nyarugenge District, have foiled a robbery attempt at one of the telecom masts in Kimisagara where thieves tried to steal the batteries.
According to Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hiteyazu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said the community night patrol while on duty on the night of February 5, apprehended two people in the foiled theft attempt.
“The two suspects were caught red-handed by the Irondo personnel with four batteries that they had just disconnected from the mast,” SSP Hitayezu said.
The vandal apparently caused network breakdown from the affected transmitter.
“The night patrol team while on routine duty found Jean Nepomscene Niwenshuti and another suspect only identified as Mugenzi, with a luggage, and out of suspicion they demanded to know what they were carrying only to find that they had batteries,” he added.
Irondo, he said, immediately apprehended them, called the Police and subsequent investigations proved that they were stolen from the transmitter in the area and vandalizing it.
The batteries are valued at Rwf1 million each.
SSP Hitayezu hailed the impact of Irondo in crime prevention and response, but called from strengthened community involvement and ownership in community policing initiatives to mainly prevent lawlessness, and improve community safety at all times.
