Illicit liquor worth Rwf23 million seized, destroyed in Nyagatare and Gicumbi

The crackdown on trafficking, sell and use of narcotic drugs and banned drinks in the country has gained momentum after Police seized illegal substances valued at over Rwf23 million in various operations conducted in the districts of Nyagatare and Gicumbi in the last four months.

The intercepted drugs include over 4000 litres of crude waragi (kanyanga) and 590 cartons of Chief Waragi, both banned gin in Rwanda, cannabis and 35 cartons of varied substandard medical drugs.

The confiscated substances were destroyed separately on October 7 in presence of students, community members and local leaders in a public exercise intended to raise awareness against the vice.

While speaking at the exercise in Nyagatare, where 2540 litres on crude waragi and 450 cartons of chief waragi were destroyed, the district mayor, Fred Sabiiti Atuhe recognized the success of anti-drug abuse campaigns, but challenged local leaders to lead the fight in their respective areas.

“The song and its meaning should be heard and understood by us all. When they say that we fight and prevent crimes, it becomes the responsibility of everyone, including local leaders. So, get close to the people and engage them in this fight to further make community safe,” Atuhe said.

Nyagatare District Police Commander, Supt. Pierre Tebuka warned against dealing in this illegal business.

“People who were found with these destroyed drugs were arrested and currently serving varied sentences or pending court decisions but the rhythm remains the same; the awareness against use and trade of illicit drugs will continue but those who will be found involved in such acts will also be arrested,” said Supt. Tebuka said.

"your partnership with police  in combating drugs is very crucial  and we commend those who have been providing timely information leading to arrest of criminals" he emphasized.

Nyagatare is said to be the transit route for the trafficked banned gin especially kanyanga and chief waragi.

Elsewhere, in Gicumbi where over 1500 litres of kanyanga and 140 cartons of Chief Waragi were destroyed, the district mayor, Alexandre Mvuyekure, who presided over the exercise, echoed the same message of partnership to curb drug abuse that affects majority the youth, and combat criminality in general.

In both events, the exercises were characterized by parading some of those that were caught with drugs, and testimonies from former drug dealers and addicts.

Community policing and fighting drug abuse in particular remains among the Rwanda National Police priorities.
