Illicit drugs including cannabis and banned gin valued at over Rwf3.9 million were destroyed yesterday in
Burera district, Butaro sector, Rusomo cell with a stern warning over the sell and use of the drugs.
Among the destroyed products included over 1700 litres of kanyanga, 25 cartons of chief waragi and 164 sachets of blue sky, all banned in Rwanda.
The drugs were seized in the Burera in the last three months.
The District Police Commander Chief Inspector of Police John Bosco Mugabo told hundreds of area residents who turned up for the public exercise to abstain from smuggling drugs, selling and consuming them reminding them that it is against the law and has negative impacts to people's health and the society .
CIP Mugabo thanked residents in the area for providing timely reports to police that help in investigations and apprehending those involved in that illegal act.
The mayor of Burera, Samuel Sembagare, also urged Burera residents to give information to security organs about known drug dealers, especially about those involved in smuggling drugs from neighboring countries.
Sembagare appealed to the youth around border communities to desist immediately from report abusing drugs and alcohol but instead participate in economic activities like agriculture and entrepreneurship.
They were also urged to join cooperatives in order to improve their daily incomes and the welfare of their families.
