Police in Kigali, on Wednesday, destroyed over 150 kilogrammes of cannabis, and 5,600 sachets of an illicit gin known as chief waragi.
Others include 120 litres of a local gin, kanyanga, 400 litres an illicit brew called morasses.
The public destruction held in Jabana sector of Gasabo district was also attended by hundreds of students, motorcycle taxi operators, area residents and local leaders.
Chief Superintendent Dan Ndayambaje, the District Police Commander, called upon residents to cooperate with security organs to ensure that such crimes and other sorts of criminality are prevented.
“Credible information from the public is very paramount for Police to achieve its noble cause of making Rwanda a more peaceful and secure nation for all,” Chief Superintendent Ndayambaje said.
Senior Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza, Police Spokesperson said the drugs were seized in different parts of the city. Majority of those involved in this illegal act, he said have been arrested.
He warned of tough measures against individuals that could still be connected to such illegal activities.
Drug trade and consumption is illegal and punishable up to five years in prison under the Rwandan penal code.
