Illicit distillery destroyed in Ruhango

Marc Hategekimana, 40, a resident of Mwendo Sector in Nyanza District, was arrested on 19 September, after he was found distilling illicit substances.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said Hategekimana at the time found with quantities of substances Hategekimana had already distilled.

Police and local leaders also seized equipment and raw materials the suspect was using to make the contraband.

“A resident of Mwendo called local leaders reporting Hategekimana to be distilling Kanyanga. Local leaders in turn informed Police in Mwendo,” CIP Karekezi said.

“Police and local leaders found Hategekimana distilling Kanyanga, and he was immediately taken into custody,” he added.

Article 594 of the penal code stipulates in its second paragraph that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five year years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million.

“We thank the people for their ownership in fighting crimes and illicit drugs in particular, through information sharing. Most drug dealers are arrested based on information we get from the people,” the spokesperson said.

He warned that “operations will continue” but added that “community policing plays a crucial role because drug dealers live in communities and known by community members.”
