Trafficking, making, selling and consuming illicit brew is harmful to one’s health and illegal in Rwanda.
It leads to other crimes like domestic and gender-based violence, assault, theft and unwanted pregnancies.
This is why the Rwanda National Police continues to fight these cases of drug abuse and appeals to the general public to report all those involved.
The RNP has been conducting various awareness programmes among communities, which has seen many of those involved arrested and illicit gin like kanyanga, chief waragi and other locally distilled illicit brew.
On May 7, Police in Kayonza district intercepted and destroyed about 700 litres of illicit brew and arrested two people in connection with the illegal act.
The suspects are only identified as Dusabimana and Abubahimana, both residents of Shyogo cell of Nyamirama sector.
The illicit brew was discovered in Dusabimana’s house and they were apparently trying to make kanyanga out of the illegal liquor.
The duo is held at Nyamirama Police station as investigations continue.
The District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police Alexis Ntaburana said the seizure of the liquor and subsequent arrest of culprits followed information provided by area residents on the illegal activities.
“Such illicit liquor is not tests and harmful to consumers’ health. There is no point we can therefore accept such acts to continue and even those involved brought to book,” CIP Ntaburana said.
He appealed to the public to continue providing information on the individuals or groups that could be connected to anything that can affect public safety.
