IGP Namuhoranye briefs police contingents ahead of MINUSCA deployment

Inspector General of Police (IGP) CG Felix Namuhoranye has urged 420 Police officers preparing for deployment to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) to uphold the country's reputation through professionalism and discipline.

The officers were briefed on Monday, July 13, at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru before departing to replace colleagues who have completed a one-year tour of duty in the Central African Republic.

The deploying force comprises three contingents, including Rwanda Formed Police Unit One Rotation 12 (RWAFPU1-12), led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aimable Busasa; Rwanda Formed Police Unit Two Rotation 11 (RWAFPU2-11), commanded by SSP Jean Paul Dominique Nkurunziza; and Rwanda Protection Support Unit Rotation 11 (RWAPSU1-11), headed by SSP Patrick Gashabuka.

Addressing the officers, IGP Namuhoranye said Rwanda's peacekeepers have earned international recognition for their professionalism and dedication, urging the new contingents to build on that legacy.

"The professionalism, discipline, and integrity you demonstrate every day will determine how our country continues to be viewed internationally. Build on the excellent work of those who served before you, uphold the trust Rwanda has earned, and always put the protection of civilians and service to humanity at the center of your mission," he said.

The Police Chief noted that Rwanda is recognized globally for its contribution to peacekeeping operations, particularly in protecting civilians and supporting peace and stability in conflict-affected communities.

He also reminded the officers that their conduct would determine whether Rwanda continues to enjoy the confidence it has built over the years, urging them to avoid misconduct, safeguard mission equipment, and respect the cultures of the international personnel they will serve alongside.

Rwanda has contributed police officers to the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic since 2014 and currently has four police contingents deployed in Bangui, Bangassou, and Kaga-Bandoro.

RWAFPU-1 and the Protection Support Unit (PSU) are based in Bangui, while RWAFPU-2 and RWAFPU-3 serve in Kaga-Bandoro and Bangassou, respectively.

The Protection Support Unit is responsible for protecting high-profile government and UN officials, including the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly, the Minister of State in charge of Justice, and the Head of the MINUSCA Police Component, among others.

Rwanda remains one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, with its police contingents recognized for professionalism, operational effectiveness and commitment to protecting civilians.
