The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana urged the Rwandan students studying abroad, who are attending a civic education programme (Itorero), to be good ambassadors and to continue raising the country’s image high.
The police chief said this on Tuesday while lecturing the 276 youth attending the sixth phase of Itorero that is underway at Rwanda Military Academy, Gako, in Bugesera District.
He lectured the students about the history and inception of Rwanda National Police, its achievements and its cooperation with different stakeholders, especially the public through community policing, to ensure sustainable security.
He also told the students how the force has moved to bring about peace in other countries and its participation with regional and international forces to counter transnational crimes.
Rwanda maintains about 600 police officers in eight peacekeeping missions including Haiti, South Sudan, Sudan and Liberia.
“Because of such vital cooperation, we have been able to fight and prevent crimes like domestic violence, corruption and drug abuse, to further the country’s governance system and development agenda,” the IGP told the students.
Rwanda was last year ranked the safest country to live in Africa, by Gallup, Inc.
The two-week exercise is aimed at equipping young persons with the skills, knowledge and capacity to positively contribute to national development upon completing their studies.
